Our Mission

Our Mission

In the context of trauma and loss our mission is to create unique, playful, healing processes for children, youth, families and community stakeholders to restore relationships for positive action.

Core Values

Hope

We remain anchored in the belief that transformation is always possible. We hold onto hope for change and commit to standing beside others as they find their own hope. With patience and a strong faith in human potential, we aim to inspire hope in situations where it may seem out of reach.

Courage

At the heart of all we do is the courage to stand firm and stay true to ourselves. Through being there for others in their times of struggle, and taking courageous steps to support hope and healing we create environments where positive change is possible.

Respect

We honour the dignity, wisdom, and capability in each person and community. Our relationships are based on mutual respect for indigenous knowledge, lived experience, family and community wisdom, and each person's ability to shape their journey. True respect involves humility, reciprocity, and partnership.

Love

We believe each individual has inherent worth and deserves love and care. Love begins with self-acceptance and self-care, and recognising our need for care, rest, and renewal builds a foundation for authentic connection with others. Our ability to support others comes from how we care for ourselves.

Play

We see play as essential for healing and renewal at all ages. Moments of play and shared laughter create lightness in life's difficulties and strengthen relationships. Play lifts spirits, builds resilience, and reminds us of our capacity for joy in challenging circumstances. Incorporating play into our work builds stronger foundations for facing life's heavier moments.

Our Story

Dlalanathi was born from a personal journey of grief, dedicated to helping children and families navigate loss.

Originally known as the Rob Smetherham Bereavement Service for Children, our organisation remains committed to providing resources for coping with grief and loss, while emphasising the importance of play and encouraging child-caregiver relationships.

Nearly 25 years ago, in a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, three stories came together to shape Dlalanathi. A young boy from a local children’s home, a caring social worker named Liesl Jewitt, and a farmer named Rob Smetherham battling brain cancer each played a role. Through their experiences, a shared vision emerged to support children facing death and cope with loss.

The collaboration between Rob and Liesl led to the establishment of the Bereavement Service on World AIDS Day in 2000, in memory of Rob. Our organisation’s journey has been guided by the initial mission to support bereaved children, inspired by Rob’s legacy of creativity, hope, and faith.

As Dlalanathi evolved, a new name was chosen to reflect our dedication to children’s well-being and the power of play. With careful consideration, we chose Dlalanathi, meaning “play with us”, “play and be well,” signifying our mission to bring hope and healing to children impacted by loss through the joy of play.
